Courageous by Dina L Sleiman

Will They Trust God's Call Even When It Leads To The Most Unexpected Places?

Inspired by the vision of the young Lady Sapphira, Rosalind of Ipsworth joins a group of men, women, and children as a defender of the cross, seeking to free captives from prisons near Tripoli. She'll gladly give herself to the cause, as she's haunted by a tragic mistake and feels she no longer deserves such joys as marriage and family might bring.

Sir Randel Penigree was reared to serve in the church but has always dreamt of protecting the innocent as a Templar knight. Joining a crusade to escape humiliation at home, he finds himself drawn to Rosalind as they partner to train and protect a group of adolescents. When faces with political intrigue and an unknown enemy bent on their destruction, they are forced to reconsider their priorities and the very nature of the God they serve.

Courageous is full of rich history and adventure. One reason I love historicals is because I love learning history this way. It is much more exciting than a history book. I didn't know much about the crusades until reading this book. You can tell Dina did a lot of research and was able to create some fictional events that fit well in the story while keeping factual events, too. The characters are strong and believable. Rosalind and Randel start out with a great friendship and they don't realize that it is turning into love. This book can read as a stand alone but I suggest starting at book one in the series, Dauntless, followed by book two, Chivalrous. I recommend this series for as young as preteen and up.

No Other Will Do by Karen Witemeyer

She Trusts Him for the Job, But Can She Trust Him With Her Heart?

Men are optional. That was the credo Emma Chandler's suffragette aunts taught her and why she established Harper's Station, a women's colony that offers a fresh start to females in need. But when a dangerous and shadowy assailant tries repeatedly to drive the women out, Emma is forced to admit they might need a man after all. One who can fight. And there is only one man she trust enough to ask.

Malachi Shaw has finally earned the respect he's always craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma's telegram arrives, he rushes back to Texas to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she's not a girl any longer. She's a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn't deserve.

As danger intensifies, Emma, Mal, and the ladies of Harper's Station must choose safety or whether to risk everything to fight for their future.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I enjoy Karen's writing so much. She is wonderful at character development. I always fall in love with the characters. These two have a relationship that seemed very unique to me. Malachi starts out rough and tough as a youth because he has had a very hard life and to the outsider, he seems like that same tough guy as an adult. When he is around Emma he isn't at all. You can tell right away he would do anything for her. Emma was a spunky little girl and carried that spunk into adulthood but at the same time was so caring towards others. I love the story of Emma and Malachi as children. That is what got to me. Then to watch their adult relationship grow...at times I was worried they would let their misgivings about themselves or the needs of the other get in the way. They each take the other's best interest and put it first above their own to a fault.
Harper's Station and it's ladies are great. Being from Texas myself, it was fun to see these women building a life for themselves and working together to make it work. I look forward to the rest of the series to find out more about the other ladies and see how their stories unfold. This series is great for any age. I think even as young as pre-teen would enjoy it. Five Stars for sure!
After growing up in California, Karen moved to Texas to attend Abilene Christian University where she earned bachelor and master's degrees in Psychology. It was also there that she met and married her own Texas hero. He roped her in good, for she has lived in Texas ever since. In fact, she fell so in love with this rugged land of sweeping sunsets and enduring pioneer spirit, that she incorporates it into the pages of her novels, setting her stories in the small towns of a state that burgeoned into greatness in the mid- to late1800s.
A life-long bookworm, Karen is living her dream by writing novels. Her books have consistently hit bestseller lists and have garnered awards such as the ACFW Carol Award, the Holt Medallion, and the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award. In addition, she is a multiple RITA and National Reader's Choice finalist. Karen is also a sought-after speaker for national writing conferences and regional workshops.
Karen's favorite aspect of her writing life is hearing from readers. Nothing encourages her heart more. She'd love to hear from you. You can contact her here.
