Lady in the Mist by Laurie Alice Eakes

By virtue of her profession as a midwife, Tabitha Eckles is the keeper of many secrets: the names of fathers of illegitimate children, the level of love and harmony within many a marriage, and now the identity of a man who may have caused his wife's death.

Dominick Cherrett is a man with his own secret to keep: namely, what he, a British nobleman, is doing on American soil working as a bondsman in the home of Mayor Kendall, a Southern gentleman with his eye on a higher office.

In a time when relations between America and England rest on the edge of a knife, Tabitha and Dominick cross paths, leading them on a journey of intrigue, threats, public disgrace, and...love. But can Tabitha trust Dominick? Finding true love seems impossible in a world set against them.

With stirring writing that draws you directly into the story, Lady in the Mist takes you on the thrilling ride of love's discovery.

Lady in the Mist was captivating. There was so much going on in the book that it kept my attention from start to finish. It was filled with mystery and a "who done it". I had a hard time being certain of who did do it until the end of the book.

Tabitha is a caring young woman who desires to be loved by a husband and have children of her own. She is a strong woman who is confident in her abilities. Yet, she has turned away from God because she believes He has done the same to her. Dominick is a young man who shows his youth while other times he is the man who knows what needs to be done and does it. He hides any fear or uncertainty behind a mask of humor.

Several of the characters thought their sins were too great for the Lord to forgive. Some thought they had to do great deeds in order to be forgiven. There are so many people in this world that believe just that. They think they have done too many really bad things that there is no way back, no way of redemption. And there are those that think if they can do enough big things it will somehow be good enough. But the Bible tells us that there is no way we can do enough to make up for our sins. And we don't have to. All we have to do is trust in Jesus and ask for forgiveness. That His love covers our sins.

This is a book I recommend because of the characters, storyline and the redemption it teaches us. I am looking forward to reading many more from this wonderful author.
